We need to support a legacy app that provides a Unix and a Win32 port. Unfortunately, later in the game, a lot of glue code was written in ksh scripts for the unix port only, and the Win32 port has lost parity. I've been trying to revive it, and I've been trying some ksh-for-windows solutions (a native build of Zsh used to work in the past), but nothing seems to work properly under Windows 7: Cygwin refuses to use both Win32 and unix-style paths, so some convoluted scripts break. Same situation for SUA/SFU. UWin doesn't work on Windows 7. The older native ports I used to use (WinZsh) also no longer work under 7.

UWIN runs best on Windows NT/2000/XP/7 with the file system NTFS, but can run in degraded mode using FAT, and further degraded on Windows 95/98/ME. (See the External link for more details.) A beta version for Windows Vista and 7 is released as UWin 5.0b (June 2011, 17th). On January 19, 2016 it was announced by AT&T that the AST and UWIN source packages were migrated to github.

So, I am in need of a Korn-shell work-alike that will work under Win 7 (64 bit would be awesome, but I've lost hope) and which can work with both cmd.exe-style paths (c:/path/to/app) and standard Unix paths (/path/to/app). Any clues?

Cygwin does support C:/path/to/app style paths, even though it likes to complain about them. (Setting CYGWIN=nodosfilewarning will shut it up). Even paths with backslashes are supported, but they need appropriate quoting to stop the shell from interpreting them.

Pdksh, the 'Public Domain Korn Shell', can be installed through Cygwin's setup.exe.

Cygwin luckily replaced pdksh (dead since 1999) with mksh. However, mksh will *not* support non-POSIX paths, as it’s primarily a BSD Unix shell, and one of its strengths is working the same across all platforms.

That being said, there’s dos2unixpath and unix2dospath (IIRC) in Interix. Maybe you can use them.

Scripts with a .sh suffix are generally Bourne shell scripts (or bash, or ksh, or zsh -- all shells derived from the Bourne shell). (Note that on Unix-like systems, including MacOS, the .sh suffix isn't necessary; the OS looks at the #!/bin/sh line at the top of the script to determine how to execute it.)

Windows doesn't provide a Bourne-like shell.

You can install Cygwin, which provides a Unix-like environment under Windows -- but it doesn't have a particularly 'native' environment. (Editorial comment: Cygwin is great for people like me who need to use Windows but would really rather be using Unix.)

There are other Unix-like subsystems that run under Windows, including MinGW and the Windows Services for UNIX package provided by Microsoft.

Or, instead of trying to write and run Unix-like shell scripts, you can write Windows batch files. These generally have a .bat or .cmd suffix. They use the same commands and syntax as the Windows interactive command prompt.

There's also the relatively new Windows PowerShell; I'm not familiar with it myself, but I've heard good things about it.

On Win the common extensions are .bat or .cmd. A good source for the commands used in Windows shell is ss64 - for CMD and PowerShell.

There is another way to do this with the Anniversary update for Windows 10. There is now a Bash (Ubuntu) shell available in Windows.

In order to use it you need to install the feature since it is not enabled by default.

1. Go to Control Panel ->Programs ->Turn Windows Features On and Off.

2. Select the checkbox for Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta). This will install the feature and prompt for a reboot.

Although the existing answers here were correct at the time, Windows 10 does now optionally include a modified version of Ubuntu running a full bash shell.

Once installed, you can open a bash prompt (much like you would a terminal in OS X/macOS) and run the script as usual, ie:

The right answer was given in a comment by Kenaniah, you have to use batch files. You need to name your shell code file to *.bat, then you can run it by clicking it or simply type its name in the terminal. Notice that the windows terminal does not work exactly like the unix terminal. You will find much help and tutorials for the commands and syntax all over the web. There is also a possibility to use the Windows PowerShell, which seems to be more unix-like.
